Meet the Staff

Rusty Ellison

Transitional Pastor

I spent my summers in Murray as a young boy. I spent countless summer Sundays listening to the voice of Dr. H. C. Chiles and it was in this church that I began to believe more strongly in Christ. The call of God to return to FBC Murray as Transitional Pastor was too strong to ignore, so I began my transitional ministry here on Easter Sunday, April 17. My role is to carry the baton passed from Pastor Keith and to hand it off to the new pastor the church will call.

I also serve as Vice President of Development for Crossings Camps, which include Jonathan Creek and Cedarmore. My wife, Pam, and I have two daughters and two godly sons-in-law, all of whom served at Crossings when it began in 2000. We have six grandchildren and a Goldendoodle named Harley.

Boyd Smith

Pastor of Prayer and Care

I came to First Baptist Church as the minister to students and activities in 1994. After serving in this capacity for nearly 17 years, I became the pastor of prayer and care, a new position at FBC.

I spend much of my time at the hospital, nursing homes, retirement centers and the homes of the elderly in Murray. I know what it’s like to be sick, as I have experienced the healing touch of God as well. I believe in the power of prayer and I keep a prayer journal of the requests that people give me. My wife Wanda and I have been happily married for over 35 years.

Later in life, I felt a calling to public education and returned to school for a degree in curriculum and instruction. I am also certified as a principal in the state of Tennessee. I joined the FBC team in August of 2019 as the youth ministry assistant. In the summers of 2018 and 2019, I served on FBC's Summer Impact Team, specifically interning with youth ministry. What a joy it is to serve our church!

I feel very blessed to have the opportunity to serve as the librarian at FBC! I am amazed at all of the different kinds of books and other resources our library has to offer, and look forward to sharing them with our church and community.

I am a graduate of Murray State University with degrees in elementary education and special education. I retired in May of 2020 from Marshall County Schools where I worked as a special education teacher at South Marshall Middle School.
